According to oral tradition, it was founded in the 15th century. At the end of the 19th century, Ankole fell under the influence of the British Empire and became its colony. During the dictatorship of Idi Amin in Uganda, the constitutional monarchy in Ankole was abolished and restored in the 1990s.
