How Alexei Navalny Will Be Remembered

On February 16th, 2024, the leader of the Russian political opposition, Alexei Navalny, was announced dead. After being kept in prison for 3 years, he was killed. It is unknown whether he was murdered directly, or through the constant torture and lack of medical attention. The 16th has become yet another dark date in the month of February. The 24th was the day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The 20th marked the beginning of the annexation of Crimea in 2014. A year later on the 27th, another opposition leader and ally of Navalny’s, Boris Nemtsov was killed near the walls of the Kremlin. The authorities are not releasing Navalny’s body to his mother, claiming that it will take them 2 weeks to establish a cause of death.
