Taqaharu’s going to be a soldier
Like his father and his brother were before
His mother doesn’t want to lose another
She cries because she knows his life’s worth more
He’s going to war with his outsized boots
His backpack and his gun
He gets dizzy with excitement
Has to chew hard on his gum
He smiles for the camera
And then frowns at what he’s done
Then he turns
And falls in line
Taqaharu’s going to have a birthday
He’ll be ten years old on Sunday week
Taqaharu wants to be a grown up
Looks like war’s more fun than hide and seek
He stands proud in his uniform
He knows he’s made it now
He’s been told he’ll be a hero
But he hasn’t been told how
He receives his plastic key to heaven
Takes his holy vow
Then he turns
Then he’s gone .
