The Sun, Moon, and Earth must be in a direct line for a total solar eclipse to occur. A total eclipse will be visible to people who are in the centre of the Moon’s shadow when it hits Earth. The sky darkens dramatically, as if it were dawn or night. People in the path of a total solar eclipse can see the Sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is normally covered by the Sun’s brilliant face. The total solar eclipse will be visible from Antarctica, while south parts of Africa, Australia and South America will be able to see a partial solar eclipse.
