CLASSIC DRIVER’S ED FILM “GET THE BIG PICTURE“ SMITH SYSTEM OF NO ACCIDENT DRIVING CHICAGO 63514
Presented by the National Safety Council and filmed in the suburbs of Chicago, Get the Big Picture is a short educational driving safety film from the 1960s (probably 1964) that discusses the importance of the driver’s field of vision—“the big picture.” The film, produced by Pilot Productions, is based on the Smith System of No-Accident Driving. The film opens with a shot from the point-of-view of a driver, driving down the street to where a potential crash may happen. The film is shot almost exclusively from the point-of-view of the driver. The car drives down a street with cars on both sides of it (01:02). The camera blurs the edges of the shot to demonstrate clear vision and fringe vision (02:00). The car drives along a road with two buses on its right (03:18). The car drives down a road and approaches Armanetti Liquors on the right (03:40). The car slows to a stop at an intersection (04:54). The film features some shots of driving through neighborhoods and commercial areas (05:45), showing viewers the following: Imperial Motors Inc. store; women walking on a sidewalk; a marquee board for a theater promoting the Jack Lemmon film Good Neighbor Sam. The car drives toward downtown Chicago (06:02); it then nears the Marina City buildings (06:08). Women in the convertible ahead of the car wave back at the camera (08:04). The car approaches an intersection where Randl’s Restaurant and Delicatessen, Four Corners Restaurant, and an optometrist office are located (09:45). (This is the Lincoln Village Shopping Center in the Peterson Park neighborhood on Chicago’s northern border). The film ends with the car driving down residential streets.
