“The Sacred War“ - The Alexandrov Red Army Choir (1942)

The Alexandrov Red Army Choir performs the “Sacred War” song or Svyaschennaya Voyna (Священная война). With English subtitles. Music by Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov, lyrics by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach. The conductor is A.V. Alexandrov. “Concert for the Front“ movie, 1942 On May 9th every year, Russians celebrate Victory Day (День Победы). This is a day to commemorate the Nazi surrender in 1945. Parades, music and fireworks highlight the celebration. “The Sacred War“ is undoubtedly the song most closely associated with the terrible struggle that the Russians endured during the war. A.V. Alexandrov wrote this music on 22 June 1941, the day the Nazis invaded Russia. The words are a war cry, and it is said that this song was one of the influences which gave Russia the courage to defend itself. However in this stark and raw first performance you can hear the terror in the tiny silences (tacets) after the abrupt line-endings, and the agony and bravery in the roar of the choir when they sing those very modern, harsh and high chords. When you hear the roar of battle in street riots it’s a mainly deep sound – but these chords are almost a scream, like the visual ones in Guernica – Picasso’s picture of villagers being burnt to death in battle. Прочитав в газете проникновенные строки, композитор Александр Васильевич Александров сочинил к ним музыку. И уже на третий день войны перед отправляющимися на фронт солдатами, на площади Белорусского вокзала, состоялась премьера «Священной войны» в исполнении Ансамбля песни и пляски Красной Армии под руководством Александрова.
