Himno a la Paz (Himno del M-19) - Hymn to Peace (Anthem of the M-19)
The anthem of the former 19th of April Movement (Movimiento 19 de Abril), a left-wing guerrilla in Colombia that allied with the FARC, ELN, and others. After some major losses in the late 1980s, it laid down its weapons in 1990 to become a political party and gradually faded into obscurity. At its height, it was the second-largest guerrilla group in Colombia, only behind the FARC.
Translation notes:
• “We clutch onto a sword“ — A reference to one of the first actions carried out by the M-19, taking one of Simón Bolívar’s swords from a museum for symbolic reasons. It was later returned when the group became a political party, seen as a symbol of their disarmament.
• Commander Pablo — Nom de guerre of Jaime Bateman Cayón, the first supreme commander of the M-19 and one of its co-founders.
