Aragonese Castle [Fortified Island / Castle ROCK] Bay of Naples, Ischia, Italy. RARE IMAGES + Hiero

Today we will dive into the oldest, rarest, and most unique photographs, maps, and artistic depictions, as well as the brief history, of the Aragonese Castle in Ischia, Bay of Naples, Italy. This immense fortified island, essentially a castle rock, has a history which dates back to 474 BC, and possibly earlier, having ties to both Greek myths and legends, and later, battles with the Etruscans and Romans. The Aragonese Castle would remain relatively dormant, a stronghold for the people of Naples with seemingly impossible construction, through the 15th century, at which time it was overtaken by Alphonso V of Aragon, leading to the structure’s current title. For centuries following, the Aragonese Castle would remain a rallying point for the Kingdom of Aragon, and would be a location used to control the Bay of Naples. We will discuss all this history and more, while browsing through some astounding Old World images of the Aragonese Castle. Enjoy! Links for topics discussed today; :Castello_Aragonese_of_Ischia
