Program notes
Three of today’s most sought-after virtuosos — pianist Alexandre Kantorow, violinist Daniel Lozakovich, and cellist Gautier Capuçon — come together for a riveting evening of chamber music at Paris’s Fondation Louis Vuitton, pairing two profound and poignant Russian masterpieces. First is the single-movement Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G Minor, one of the earliest works by an 18-year-old Sergei Rachmaninov, a great admirer of Tchaikovsky — whose own Trio in A Minor, which may have inspired the Rachmaninov work, rounds out the program. Composed in memory of Tchaikovsky’s friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, this brooding and romantic trio — the composer’s only work written for these three instruments — ends, like Rachmaninov’s, with a memorable funeral march.
