Genieve Figgis, Imaginary Friends
Almine Rech London
November 19 – December 19, 2020
Almine Rech presents “Imaginary Friends,” Genieve Figgis’ fifth solo exhibition with the gallery since 2015, and her second presentation in London.
“Imaginary Friends” features twenty-one acrylic on canvas paintings, all of which have never been exhibited before. All of these works were also painted over Figgis’ long months of COVID-19 confinement.
“Imaginary Friends” continues Figgis’ interest in presenting aristocracy on display, but focuses further on the genre of social portraiture. In this exhibition, we see royal couples, “Royal friends,” young women picnicking in formal dress, a “fashion party,” “Ladies with handbags,” “Tudors,” and a portrait of an older woman, smiling and drinking.
