However in the mid-1970s the industry was still in its infancy. There weren’t any large personal computer manufacturers and the facilities to build things in mass volumes didn’t exist; the market was too small. Since the market for a home computer tended to be engineering types and those with an interest in electronics, it made sense to outsource assembly to them and thereby keep costs low.
