Taiwan earthquake: Strongest tremor in 25 years flattens buildings leaving dead and wounded
Multiple people are dead and scores more wounded after a powerful earthquake hit Taiwan. Dozens of buildings were damaged and triggered tsunami warnings that extended to Japan and the Philippines. The magnitude-7.4 quake struck just before 8:00 am local time (0000 GMT), with the United States Geological Survey putting the epicentre 18 kilometres south of Taiwan’s Hualien City, at a depth of 34.8 kilometres. Officials said the quake was the strongest to shake the island in at least 25 years and warned of more tremors in the days ahead. Video from around the country shows buildings swaying as the quake struck, while others partially collapsed and sprayed debris into the streets. Rescue efforts are underway to free dozens of people trapped in torn down buildings. Taiwan’s military were dispatched to help with disaster relief.
