The Pontifical Swiss Guard is the de facto military of the Vatican City. Established in 1506 under Pope Julius II, the Swiss Guard is responsible for the safety of the Pope, including the security of the Apostolic Palace. Recruits to the guards must be unmarried Swiss catholic males between 19 and 30 years of age who have completed basic training with the Swiss Armed Force. The commanding languages of the Guard are German and Italian. The Swiss Guard is equipped with traditional weapons, such as the halberd, as well as with modern firearms. Music: Sabaton – The Last Stand The song is about the “Sacco di Roma“ (engl: Sack of Rome). On 6 May 1527, Rome was conquered by an army of 24,000 German, Spanish and Italian mercenaries. While 147 of 189 guardsmen defended the St. Peter’s Square, the other 42 guardsmen and the Pope Clement VII escaped to the Castel Sant’Angelo. After a few weeks of siege, Clement VII surrendered.
