Most years Christians flock to the city of Bethlehem to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in the place they believe he was born, but this year, the city’s mayor says it’s in mourning as the death toll in the Israel-Hamas war passes 20,000. There are no joyful lights or trees, and Manger Square’s Nativity scene looks very different. Figurines of Jesus and his family aren’t standing serenely in a stable, but are among rubble and razor wire in a show of solidarity for the people in Gaza.
