Medinet Habu is a large-scale temple complex located on the west bank of the Nile near the city of Luxor. It was built during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses III, the last of the great kings of the New Kingdom, when Egypt entered a period of prosperity for the last time in its entire three thousand-year history. This is a striking and best-preserved example of the mortuary temple of the rulers of the New Kingdom. Ramses III took the throne after his father’s short two-year reign. He identified himself with the god of war, Montu, and, like him, was a competent and wise commander who more than once saved his people from the invasion of Palestinians and sea peoples. After defeating these peoples, the pharaoh received rich offerings from them and started building palaces and temples, the most beautiful of which is the Medinet Abu mortuary complex, which is considered the largest after the Karnak temple of Amon Ra. Its area is about 7 thousand m2.
