Tibetan mastiff vs leopard | Bhotia dog vs leopard | Himalayan mastiff vs leopard | Gaddi Kutta vs leopard
Our video today is about a Himalayan Mastiff fending off a leopard. Certain dog breeds such as Alabais, Caucasian shepherds, kangals, dogo argentinos, tibetan mastiffs, bully kuttas, himalayan mastiffs, bull mastiffs, bull arabs etc are able to put up a fight with wild animals such as leopards, bears, wild boars etc. In a one on one fight between a leopard and dog, 90% of the time leopard will come out as a winner.
As Leopards are fierce, tremendously strong and with unmatchable speed.
They have teeth AND 4 sets of claws all of which it will use in a fight. Having said that, it doesn’t mean no dog can fight them off. As we’ve mentioned in our previous videos ample times, that a dog that has been raised on a farm or in an area where it has to fend off wild animals for survival will be totally different than a dog raised in comfort of living room.
Leopard attacks on dogs are quite common in India. In a study carried out by WWF in India leopard scats from areas leopard populated areas were identified using DNA analysis showing the big cats diet. Even though goats occurred at seven times higher compared to the density of dogs dogs constituted 40% of the prey biomass of leopards and goats only 11%. Indian farmers have a long tradition of penning goats and other wildlife at night, protecting them from roaming leopards. Dogs by contrast are free to roam or are chained outside houses. But in many regions including hilly areas leopards usually hunt dogs.
Now! lets come back to our video of the day. Leopard tried to enter a house where the Himalayan mastiff was guarding the property. As soon as the leopard saw the Himalayan mastiff out side at the front gate, it attacked it thinking of it as an easy meal.
But little did the leopard know that it would be its biggest mistake.
As soon as the leopard jumped at Himalayan mastiff the mastiff grabbed hold of one of its front legs and started to shake it. Dogs are predators by nature. They’ll catch and kill small to medium-sized animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, lizards, and even cats, if they get a chance. While mice and other tiny mammals are usually dispatched quickly with a bite, larger animals are unlikely to be killed quickly enough just by biting.
Instead, dogs have developed the ‘killing shake’. This violent shake should break their prey’s neck or back, delivering a quick kill.
While the Himalayan mastiff was shaking the front leg of the leopard, it can be seen that the leopard was in a lot of pain and was constantly trying to escape. This mastiff proved its worth to the owner. by defending the property that it was guarding.
