“We’re here, we’re queer, we’re coming for your children“ Queer Nation chanted at NYC Drag March

On June 23, 2023, hundreds of drag queens and kings marched through the streets of New York City to celebrate their identity and demand respect. The march was organized by Queer Nation, a radical activist group that emerged in the early 1990s to fight against homophobia and discrimination. The marchers chanted slogans such as “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re coming for your children“ and “Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Homophobia’s got to go!“ They also carried signs and banners with messages like “Silence=Death“ and “Love Wins“. The slogan “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re coming for your children“ is not meant to be taken literally, but rather as a provocative way of challenging the stereotypes and fears that some people have about the LGBTQ community. The marchers wanted to show that they are not ashamed of who they are and that they have a right to exist and be happy. The NYC Drag March is one of the many events that take place during Pride Month, a global celebration of LGBTQ culture and history. The march also coincides with the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of protests that sparked the modern gay rights movement in 1969. The marchers received cheers and support from many bystanders and allies, but also faced some hostility and harassment from anti-LGBTQ groups and individuals. The marchers did not let that stop them from expressing themselves and having fun. The NYC Drag March is a colorful and festive demonstration of the diversity and creativity of the LGBTQ community. It is also a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice that they face every day.
