Protest against US ahead of International Women’s Day

(7 Mar 2018) LEADIN: Dozens of women gather in Gaza City ahead of International Women’s Day. Their protest focuses on the decision of the US to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. STORYLINE: These women are not happy - and their anger is directed at US President Donald Trump. Gathered in Gaza city, these female Hamas supporters have called a protest ahead of Thursday’s International Women’s Day. Holding the Quran and the key of return they chant in unison. “We all are for you Aqsa,“ they shout, referring to the holy city of Jerusalem. On 6 December, Trump announced that the US would recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Moreover, they would be moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. But months later, these women still do not accept the decision. “Damned Trump, your decision will not pass.“ The controversial step to move the US embassy has infuriated the Palestinians, who claim part of Jerusalem for the capital of an eventual state. Palestinians have now rejected US mediation in efforts to resume long-stalled peace talks with Israel. But for these women, there are many more reasons to protest. “How can we celebrate the women’s international day while we are suffering?“ Rahma Abu Ouda demands. “How can we celebrate while Gaza has been under blockade for 12 years? We are here today to say to the whole Arab world that there is no electricity, fuel, water, and all kinds of life’s necessities are prevented.“ Hamas seized control of Gaza from Fatah forces in 2007. In November, Hamas handed over control of Gaza’s border crossings to the Palestinian Authority. It was the first tangible concession in years of Egyptian-brokered reconciliation talks. But negotiations have bogged down since then as people in Gaza Strip continue to contend with dire electricity shortages.
