А lot of people don’t know this but I almost gave up learning Serbian... After months and months of hard work, I arrived in Serbia to find that my level was not good enough to be able to hold a conversation with someone for more than a few hours and I lost faith in my ability to speak Serbian, but instead of giving up, I worked even harder. I would study for almost 5 hours a day, insist with my friends and boyfriend to speak with them in Serbian (even if I didn’t understand them) and no matter how frustrating it was, I kept fighting for speaking proficiency. After one year of living in Serbia, I found myself, suddenly, at a level that I could have never dreamed of. Of course, I still make mistakes, but I no longer get nervous when I speak to someone or become afraid that I won’t understand them.
