In 1988, when beat ’em up and horror games were slightly uncommon, Splatterhouse became a much copied formula. This game showed so much blood and extreme violence (maybe a little less extreme due to low quality of the games from that era though). It’s a game clearly based on classic “trash horror“, very popular in 70’ and 80’s.
