The solar term of Mang Zhong (The Grain in Ear)

Mangzhong, the 9th solar term among the 24 solar terms, is the third term of the summer season and marks the beginning of the fifth month in the traditional Chinese calendar. During Mangzhong, the handle of the Big Dipper points to Si, and the sun reaches 75 degrees of celestial longitude. It falls annually between June 5th and 7th on the Gregorian calendar. The name ’Mangzhong’ signifies that ’crops with awns can be planted, but planting after this period would be ineffective.’ During this time, temperatures significantly rise, rainfall is abundant, and the air humidity is high, making it suitable for planting crops such as late rice and other grains. Agricultural activities and cultivation are divided by the solar term of Mangzhong, as the survival rate of crops decreases after this period. It reflects the ancient agricultural culture’s observance of seasonal changes.
