Solo #4 from Advanced Funk Studies by Rick Latham

Here is solo #4 from the classic drumming book Advanced Funk Studies by Rick Latham. This is one of my favorite books of all time and I use it regularly with students. Solo #4 is, in my opinion, the most difficult solo in the book. It calls for a good bit of coordination and technique and the ability to switch between grooves seamlessly. It is written in the style of Steve Gadd and features his take on the samba rhythm. In this video I start with a performance of solo #5 and show you two different camera views of the performance including a view of my feet. Then I talk about the techniques used to play the piece.
