On Friday, the terror group claimed responsibility for the attack in a short message published on Telegram by the ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq. It did not present proof to back up the claim. Video footage from Crocus City Hall shows the large complex, which includes both the music hall and a shopping center, on fire, with smoke pouring into the air. According to state news agency RIA Novosti, the armed persons “opened fire with automatic weapons“ and “threw a grenade or an incendiary bomb, which started a fire.“ They then “allegedly fled in a white Renault car,“ according to the news agency. More than six hours later, the fire was largely contained. “There are still some pockets of fire, but the fire has been mostly eliminated,“ Moscow Governor Andrey Vorobyov stated on Telegram. The deadliest terror attack on Moscow in decades, Friday’s assault occurred less than a week after President Vladimir Putin won another term in office with an overwhelming majority in a staged election, extending his grip on the country he has ruled since the turn of the century. With attention focused on the country’s conflict with neighboring Ukraine, Putin had trumpeted a message of national security before Russians went to the polls. According to Russia 24, the slaughter occurred prior to the band Picnic’s concert. “Unidentified people in camouflage broke into Crocus City Hall and began shooting before the start of the concert,“ the Prosecutor General’s Office said, according to TASS. As the attack began, video footage showed terror, with masses huddling together, shouting, and crouching beneath cushioned chairs as gunshots echoed across the large hall. According to video obtained by CNN, one group of people cowering close to a massive wall of windows outside the concert venue were forced to break them in order to escape gunshots. CNN geolocated footage shows an armed guy setting at least one fire inside the venue. The subject is seen carrying something in their hand, and as they walk off-screen, the video shows a bright flash of light from a big flame. A SWAT squad was dispatched to the scene, and over 70 ambulances and physicians assisted the casualties.
