The New Covenant.
Torah: Deuteronomy 3:23-5:18.
Haftarah: Isaiah 40:1-26.
Shabbat Nachamu.
The prophet Jeremiah is widely credited with announcing the new covenant - Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah (Jeremiah 31:31; Hebrews 8:8). However, Jeremiah’s pronouncement is a latter confirmation of the revelation given to Moses at the time when he was about to die and was pleading for a postponement of the sentence of death passed on him by the Mighty One. The consolation provided by the Mighty One in transferring the mantle of leadership from Moses to Yehoshua son of Nun, allows me to compare the old and the new covenants as in Deuteronomy 3:23-5:18 the people prepare to enter the land and in Isaiah 40:1-26 the people are reassured of returning to the land.
The new covenant is voiced in the announcement of Yehoshua as the replacement for Moses. At that time, this Yehoshua was the son of Nun. In our time, Yehoshua the Messiah, son of Joseph is the new covenant which will give people eternal life, as we shall read from the scriptures. Please pay attention as I try to show the connection between Moses as the old covenant and Yehoshua as the new covenant that the people of the Mighty One would be bound to in the land of the promise and for life.
In the time of Yehoshua who is the embodiment of the new covenant, the single most important difference is the presence of the Set Apart Spirit in all who believe as Peter in the book of Acts quoting the prophet Joel reminded those persons of the crowd who thought they were drunk at nine o’clock in the morning. It is the presence of the Spirit that guides believers to the truth and reveals through the power of the word of the Mighty One the character of anyone whom they come across.
As the writer of the book of Hebrews and Messiah himself acknowledges, the specifics of the new covenant are fully embodied in Yehoshua.
Hebrews 9:14-15.
How much more will the blood of Messiah, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to the Mighty One, cleanse our conscience from dead works to serve the living Mighty One? For this reason, he is the mediator of a new covenant. This is so that, since a death has taken place to free those under the first covenant from their sins, those who are called will receive the promise of an eternal inheritance.
