THELONIOUS MONK (A Sphere of influence) Jazz History #49
Jazz has spawned quite a few iconoclastic characters, but few more so than Thelonious Monk. Coming of age in the bebop era, Monk’s unique and at times jarringly dissonant approach was, and even today may not be easy to grasp. As is the case with other visionary innovators—Ornette Coleman comes to mind—it took some time before Monk’s genius came to full light, but he ultimately came to be regarded as one of the most influential figures in the evolution of the music, as a pianist and even more so as a composer, one whose impact remains far reaching and powerful more than half a century later.
