Last tune of the third set. It’s 1am, and this great band lays down a beautiful performance on Irving Berlin’s “Remember“. Al McLean is playing on a vintage Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone, and conjures some of the great alto players in his performance. Sounding quite apart from his usual tenor delivery, McLean expresses a decidedly Bebop vibe on alto. For those who are familiar with McLean’s work, it is not surprising, as he will adapt like a chameleon to the situation, or in this case, to what the instrument inspires.
This installment of Jazz, Period. features Al McLean with Shanghai based bassist Brian Hurley, who has a long history with the saxophonist. The pair are joined by fine Montreal guitarist Carlos Jimenez and West Coast drummer Jesse Cahill.
Cahill, incidentally, was very pleased to be involved in a Jazz, Period. shoot as he is an avid photographer in addition to his work in music.
Thank you to Twigg Musique and Diese Onze for sponsoring this Jazz, Pe
