The cataclysmic explosion of Santa María in 1902 was one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. It devastated the surrounding landscape, and left a huge crater in the side of the mountain. Santiaguito is a complex of lava domes and lava flows that began erupting into that crater in 1922, and today, after 90 years of continuous activity. Eruptive history at Santa Maria is thought to have begun 30000 years ago, resulting in gradual construction of a 3772m high stratovolcano.
