With the Etudes, she imposes dual compositional restrictions–serial technique and focus on a specific technical concern for each piece. Still, she is more concerned with the resulting music than with the compositional process alone. In a letter responding to questions from a student writing about her Etudes, Talma says, ’The Etudes were written to challenge the pianist technically and musically.
