This lecture explains the transitivity axiom that is necessary for expected utility theory. This is the same transitive property you might have learned in a math class. Simply put, if X is preferred to Y and Y is preferred to Z, then X must be preferred to Z. Violating transitivity leads to preference cycles, which are nonsensical messes.
