The actions are concerned with one joint in isolation, the shoulder. During the upward phase of the lateral raise, there is abduction, brought about by the Anterior Deltoid muscles. The upward movement is a concentric muscle contraction. During the downward phase, at the shoulder, the Anterior Deltoid muscles cause adduction.
