In the project FutureAM the Fraunhofer IAPT in Hamburg is researching new methods for the optimization of AM parts. In this example topology optimization of the thermal conductivity was used to create a lightweight and high-performance heat sink.
The optimization and design tasks can be automized and customized utilizing simulation apps.
Regarding the 3D printing process, possible porosities are detected later on by CT scanning. This serves as a database for in-process porosity detection and production lif
