Alexander Gretchaninov: Chant Élégiaque, Op. 146 No. 1, from ’Aquarelles’
Gretchaninov (1864-1956) studied at the Moscow Conservatoire, and taught composition there until 1922 when he moved to Paris, and finally (in 1940) to New York, becoming an American citizen. He is best known today for his Russian church music and for works for children. The Aquarelles - written in a conservative idiom for the time - were published in 1935.
