HOW DANGEROUS ARE DISCARDING SABOTS? | Sabot Petal vs BTR-80A | Armour Penetration Simulation
The simulation presents the impact of an Aluminium Alloy sabot petal on the side armour of a BTR-80A at extremely close range.
Discarding sabots are a component of sub-calibre projectiles which fall away upon leaving the barrel. These sabot petals spread out rapidly, with the simulation representing their position at about 10m from the barrel.
The sabot is modelled after 105mm M111 Hetz, with them being simulated as AA7150 (high strength aluminium alloy). It couldn’t be determined if 7150 is the exact grade used for the M111 sabot, but it is used for some other 105mm sabots. The BTR-80A thickness and angles were taken from Warthunder as sources vary on the matter. The High Hardness Armour (HHA) had been modelled with a 500BHN hardness.
