Three years ago today, I released Strawberry Cake for the first time. A Shibuya-kei and Picopop inspired Bossa Nova tune I made as a homage to artists such as Nagisa Cosmetic and early Capsule, since I loved that sound so much. This song seems to have gotten mildly popular, being used as background music by a couple of big youtubers, such as Slimecircle who used it for 1.5 seconds on his Bowser’s Fury vid. But most notably it was used on zamsire’s “eggdog board meeting“, which is a great video, go watch it. I think it’s now my biggest contribution to the internet as it has technically been listened to a couple millions of times by many people without them realizing it. I find pretty bizarre that a song that was just a direct attempt at producing something from a genre that is very niche and little known and heavily divorced from what you tipically hear made on Beepbox ended up getting more attention than the very genre that inspired it... ...So, if you like this sound, I encourage you to check out Shibuya-kei and Picopop. Capsule’s works from 2002 - 2005 and anything that appeared on the Contemode V.A. compilations. It’s largely sweet 2000s lounge general MIDI goodness and was the basis for my style for a long time. The tracks on this album were largely made between 2021 and 2022. The first prototype of this album was finished all the way back in September of last year. But only now I’m getting to releasing this officially. So cool I’m finally posting this My friends Subicat and 13Js have made their own arrangements of the song, so I featured them both here. Please check out their stuff. Subi is making soundtracks for object shows and 13Js has worked with David on Electric Jungle Critters back in ’88. Their Soundcloud pages were listed next to the tracklist. The characters on the cover art are Nobo (me!) and Skibble (that green dude). They’re both tanukis! I drew and designed both covers.
