How to Create 3D Roses for Embroidery Using the Standalone Woven Picot Stitch Technique
The traditional woven picot stitch technique creates beautiful 3D flowers, but it can be challenging to weave closely spaced petals using a needle in a small area. To simplify the process, I’ve developed a method called “Standalone Picot.“
With this technique, I create my woven petals on a fabric that is stretched on a separate embroidery hoop, rather than directly on the final fabric where my design will be. To achieve this, I use small safety pins on the backside of the fabric. These safety pins act as anchors on the front side of the fabric, enabling me to pass my weaving threads through and securely hold them in place.
Once the weaving is complete, I remove the pins, leaving me with petals created solely with needlework.
Woven picot stitch is commonly used for creating 3D embroidery of flowers with long, pointed petals, such as daisies.
Let’s try something different this time. Join me as we delve into creating stunning 3D embroidered roses using my new technique. In this tutorial video, I will demonstrate how to make wide woven picot stitch petals and assemble them into a beautiful rose.
*If you’re curious why I chose to use amigurumi yarn, let me summarize it for you. I thought it would be a more affordable material for beginners to experiment with weaving. Amigurumi yarns are typically composed of 5-6 strands of thread, which makes it easier to determine the thickness of your working yarn. In most cases, even a single strand is strong enough to withstand needle weaving without breaking. The cost-effectiveness of amigurumi yarn makes it a great choice, especially for beginners who want to practice weaving without investing heavily in materials.
