A Quick Look at a Star Survives Close Call with a Black Hole
A star brushed a giant black hole and survived, according to a new study using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA’s XMM-Newton.
Prior to its close encounter with the black hole, the star was a red giant star that had become bloated as it burned through its fuel.
Once it was caught by the black hole’s gravity, the outer layers were stripped off and left behind a white dwarf star.
The white dwarf travels the black hole once every 9 hours and gives off a burst of X-rays on its nearest point in its orb
