A Liz Truss ally has pulled out of the launch of the new Popular Conservatives group at the last minute as he urged his fellow Tory MPs to “stick to the plan” under Rishi Sunak. Ranil Jayawardena, who served as Ms Truss’s environment secretary, was scheduled to speak alongside the former prime minister in Central London on Tuesday. The Popular Conservatives are the newest in a string of backbench caucuses aimed at pushing the party to the Right until and beyond the next general election. Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, the former business secretary, and Lee Anderson, who last month quit as deputy Tory chairman over Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda Bill, will join Ms Truss on the panel.
