Cyprus - Greek Cypriot shot dead

(14 Aug 1996) T/I: 11:25:46 GS: 10:20:29 Turkish-Cypriot forces shot dead a Greek-Cypriot and wounded two United Nations peacekeepers in a new outbreak of ethnic violence on Cyprus Wednesday (14/8). The Greek-Cypriot protestor was shot after he broke through barbed wire on the edge of the Turkish-Cypriot zone at Dherinia in eastern Cyprus. The shooting happened near the spot where another Greek-Cypriot, who was also protesting against the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus, was beaten to death on Sunday (11/8). After his funeral on Wednesday (14/8) hundreds of protestors stormed into no-man’s land in Dherinia and threw stones until the Turkish-Cypriot police opened fire.
