Quite understandable. From the opening bars of this performance one is aware that this is truly one of the greatest performances of this symphony on record, and certainly ranks among Furtwängler’s best concert recordings, which speaks volumes in and of itself. By the 1950s the Neumann U-47 had become one of Furtwangler’s most devoted followers, and a single U-47 is all that was needed for the highest quality sonic image.
