With roads forced into surrender, a grim aura envelops Asturias, crippling transportation networks and isolating communities. Strong winds have forced the closure of public parks in the capital Madrid and in Barcelona in the northeast. In the northern town of Begont, four local families had to bail out with inflatable life rafts after being trapped by a rising river that flows through the area. Transportation was also affected by the winter storm, with roads temporarily blocked by snow, flood waters and fallen trees in places. Several thousand schoolchildren in the highlands of northern Spain have canceled classes due to winter weather.
