Navvies In Skirts (1916)

Navvies in Skirts - women take jobs as navvies during World War One. Location of events unknown. Pan along line of women in long skirts shovelling rocks from a huge pile 15 feet high. Then a line of female navvies (building labourers) approaching pushing full wheelbarrow. Shot looking down line of square openings at ground level, some with boards laid across. Dark buildings in background - whole scene very Dickensian. The women workers push wheelbarrows out and dump their loads into the openings. Next, a great shot of woman pushing the wheelbarrow forward and dumping rocks into what seems to be a big open cellar with absolutely gigantic pile of rocks behind her; other women at work. Proletariat; heavy; strength; the sexes. G378 FILM ID:1848.2 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV.
