Would you like to sound more like a native English speaker? Well, this vowel sound, known as SCHWA, is worth getting to know! It occurs very frequently in spoken English, about once in every three vowel sounds, in words such as “the”, the first syllable of “about”, and the second syllable of “sofa”. One of the most difficult aspects of the schwa sound is that in order to pronounce it correctly, you have to almost ignore the normal sound of the vowel you are looking at and make the schwa sound instead. In this lesson I’ll give examples of words containing the schwa, and I’ll demonstrate how to pronounce them. So you can benefit in two ways, both in terms of English pronunciation and English vocabulary!
