The soundtrack, which stands as one of the most celebrated titles in the composer’s body of work, was originally issued in 1974 to score the same-titled film by Dino Risi. The opus too is renowned for being one of the all-time classics of Italian cinema, starring legendary actor Vittorio Gassman, whose intense and touching performance won him the Award for Best Actor at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. where the film was an acclaimed triumph. The following year, the motion picture was also nominated for two Oscars, as Best Foreign Film and Best Screenplay Adapted From Other Material. Armando Trovajoli once said that the soundtrack “is one of the compositions I gave my soul for”. And that comes as no surprise, given its moving trumpet phrases, melancholic piano melodies, and refined strings arrangements that poignantly match the bittersweet feeling of love and loss portrayed by the film. However, there also is room for forays into disco, offered by “Woman’s Parfume”, one of the album’s highlights and a track that could well belong on a Barry White’s greatest hits record.
