4.2 Roman Art: Pompeii’s Wall Paintings, and the Domus

A look at the wall paintings and domestic architecture of Pompeii. Note on Linear Perspective: I didn’t mention this term directly in the lecture, but I talked about the concept, and it’s important to know. The Second Style wall painting at the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor in Boscoreale represents linear perspective, which is when the relative size, shape, and position of objects are determined by drawn or imagined lines converging at a point on the horizon, called the “vanishing point.“ In this case, the diagonals of the colonnade converge in a vanishing point behind the tholos, creating a sense of depth.
