GURU WHO TAUGHT DEEPAK CHOPRA & SRI SRI

In this episode, Rajiv Malhotra and Jay Glaser go back in time to reminisce about the years of Deepak Chopra and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram. Dr. Glaser talks about when Deepak Chopra got into the Transcendental Meditation movement which was more than 12 years after Dr. Glaser himself had joined the movement. He speaks about how Maharishi exhorted Deepak to quit his flourishing medical practice to join him full time and how despite initial hesitations, Deepak did join him. Dr. Glaser clarifies that Deepak Chopra never taught TM but spoke and write about it. He speaks about how Deepak read up on psycho-neuro-immunology which was just starting up at the time and linked it successfully to Maharishi’s TM technique. They talk about Deepak Chopra’s book Quantum Healing, which actually brought Ayurveda to America in a big way. They talk of Chopra’s meeting with Aga Khan and what that did for the whole movement. They then talk of the reasons for Deepak Chopra moving on from the movement. They then move on to reminiscing about Sri Sri Ravishankar and his years with Maharishi. Dr. Glaser says that Sri Sri was Maharishi’s favorite Rig Vedic pundit and would be present for all occasions as one of the 4 vedic pandits that Maharishi would insist on having for every occasion. He talks about how attentive Sri Sri was at the time and how he would keep watching Maharishi absorbing everything happening around him. Sri Sri was also as intelligent a person as Deepak Chopra. Dr. Glaser shares an anecdote about Sri Sri which demonstrated his sensitive nature. Maharishi’s book The Science of Being and The Art of Living was the inspiration for the movement that Sri Sri started which is today called the The Art of Living. They also talk about how Sri Sri recently bought some land in North Carolina which initially belonged to the Maharishi movement. This thus is a small capsule of reminiscences of the Deepak Chopra and Sri Sri years with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
