Mexico’s Hurricane Otis survivors express fear of dwindling resources: “People are desperate“

Residents and survivor of the Hurricane Otis-battered city of Acapulco, Mexico flocked to a gas station on Thursday, hoping to find some gasoline to keep working or leave the city after the Category 5 tropical storm killed at least 27 people and left four people missing the night before. The truth is people are desperate,” local resident Juan Carlos Garcia said on Thursday. “There is no gasoline. I hope people don’t riot because it’s getting serious now,” he added. Though a popular beach resort city, Acapulco is one of the poorest in Mexico. The local economy depends heavily on its tourism; however, Otis has destroyed some of the destination’s most famous hotels across the shoreline. “I know the magnitude so I’m trying to send as many resources as possible, food resources, anything that can help,” Andra Maria Vaduva — a Hurricane Otis survivor visiting Acapulco for a birthday celebration — said after arriving safely back in Mexico City. The storm’s impact has left people questioning why it hit so hard when most forecasts said it would graze by the region as a minimal hurricane.
