Pinara (Lycian: 𐊓𐊆𐊍𐊍𐊁𐊑𐊏𐊆) was a large port city of ancient Lycia at the foot of Mount Cragus (now Mount Babadağ), and not far from the western bank of the River Xanthos (now Eşen Stream). According to the Lycian history of Menecrates quoted by Stephanus of Byzantium, “when Xanthos became overpopulated, a group of elders established a city on top of the Mount Cragus and called it “Pinara,“ which means “round.“ We spent a few hours here, spending most of the time at one of world’s most beautiful ancient Roman theaters and some Lycian sarcophagi.
