Top 7 Gar Species

In this video i will be going through the top 7 gar fish species alive today. Gar are beautiful large freshwater fish that can be found in northern and central America. Gar fish have been on the planet for millions of years and were on the planet the same time as the dinosaurs but there are only 7 species still alive today which is why this isn’t a top 10 list. Gar fish can be kept in the aquarium but they are very large fish with the alligator gar being the biggest and can reach over 3 meters long and because of their massive size they are tank busting fish and should only be kept in the biggest of aquariums and ponds. Gar are predators and usually feed on other fish in the wild but they are ambush predators and as opportunistic predatory fish they will also eat crustaceans and large insects. I will be going through all 7 prehistoric gar fish species including the shortnose and longnose gar to the giant alligator gar and the more rare Cuban and tropical gar. The other two species of gar are often confused with one another and are very popular in the aquarium trade and they are the spotted gar and the Florida gar. What is your favourite species of gar?
