유튜버에서 가수로 데뷔 변화하는 K-pop 아티스트, ARTBEAT, 별은 인터뷰 K-pop idols and singers usually debut after years of training by their agencies. But recently, some performers have built careers as idols and singers on YouTube. Our Kim Jung-sil went and met the girl group ARTBEAT and an emerging solo singing sensation. Meet the new girl group ARTBEAT. These seven girls from Daegu are well known for their K-pop cover dance performances on their YouTube channel, ARTBEAT, with more than 3.9 million subscribers worldwide. “One, two, three. Hello! We are ARTBEAT.“ Their recent music video “Magic” already has over 900,000 views on YouTube. But not everyone was supportive of their new challenge. “There were comments that said, “Why are dance YouTubers debuting?” I admit it was hurtful at first but we know there are more supporters than haters, and we hope to prove to people with prejudice that we are idols.” In order to prove themselves, the members practice their vocals and dance for more than five hours a day. “Behind this door the members of ARTBEAT are busy practicing their choreography. Let’s go meet them.” Leader Seyoung is the one that gives advice to members to perfect their choreography. “Se-young can be really strict when practicing. It’s like she can see us from 360 degrees. Even if we mess up behind her, she knows!” But at the end of the day, they’re close friends before they’re co-workers , a concept rather unique in K-pop, where groups have mostly been formed by agencies for business purposes. ARTBEAT Channel Executive Director Kim Jun-seok explained the group’s charm. “I mean, YouTubers feel closer to people than celebrities. So, we hope to approach the public with more friendliness and comfort than conventional idols.” Another YouTuber who made her debut as a professional singer is Byeol Eun, whose latest single “The Season of You“ was used on the soundtrack for the South Korean drama “Love in Contract.“ Byeol Eun gave advice to people aspiring to debut. “You need to have an ace up your sleeve. And just keep working hard while enjoying yourself. We have the awesome advantage of using social media and making ourselves known worldwide. But it’s already a crowded market, so it’s really important to find your strength and pursue it.” Industry experts said if YouTube creators succeed as artists, this new debut trend could grow in the future.
