Knife attacks: Fantasy vs. reality (first-person view)

I’ve often seen martial arts instructors construct an astonishingly unrealistic scenario for knife defense and find that to be dangerously irresponsible. A knife vs. unarmed encounter is among the worst things you can face, and trying to apply some flashy, complicated techniques that require the attacker to move like a robot might get you seriously hurt or even killed. The best way to win against an attacker with a knife is to be somewhere else. Situational awareness is the key to avoid being picked as a victim. If that fails, I would suggest using your surroundings as much as possible, trying to get obstacles between you and the attacker and/or use improvised weapons with more reach to keep them at a distance. Kicks would be the last resort. Even though they would briefly expose your legs to cuts and stabs, they have longer reach and may keep the knife user at a distance.
